Money-Saving Tips for Remodeling Rooms Using a Hammer Drill and Other Tools
Saturday, October 17th, 2009Bearing in mind the present financial situation, many homeowners have decided not to modernize their house because they cannot afford to. If you're in that same predicament, you can rest easy that you can update your surroundings with a few enhancements without spending an arm and a leg in the process.
Remodeling the Basics on a Budget
Start with fundamentals when mulling over a remodel. Assess from ceiling to floors first. This is the basis for your renovation. If you have a “popcorn” ceiling, consider either repainting it a new, fresh color or hiring someone to remove and replace it it with a smooth pattern. Don't forget to paint on a high-grade primer before your paint coat! Next, look at the walls and choose a neutral shade that will compliment with light and earthy tones and will go with any designs and decorations. Fix any holes and marks in your walls and doors so your home looks fresh and refinished. Next, move on to the floor covering: are the flooring and baseboards in good shape? If they are, repaint the baseboards a nice white color to make the home look modern and attractive. If you plan to rip out and re-cover the floors, consider stone tiles, because they are easy on your wallet per square foot and look great much longer than carpet does. If you will be installing carpet, choose a thick pile that is somewhere between brown and beige so that stains will not be as visible and the carpet will resist crushing for many years.
Making Your Main Rooms Shine
Modernizing your bathrooms and kitchen are the wisest fixes you can put into your house. If the cabinetry is in good repair, consider either repainting the existing cabinets or replacing them. If you will be refacing them, get a good power drill and detach the hinges and handles from the cabinet doors to release them. If needed, you can purchase new cabinet facing from your local do-it-yourself store. For bigger savings, re-stain your own doors. Again, remove the doors from the cabinets and then brush on a paint remover to the existing finish and use a scraper made from hard plastic just for this purpose. Once all trace of the old finish has been removed, sand the cabinets once over with a sander using medium-grit sandpaper. A final sanding should be performed last with a fine-grit sandpaper after that. Rub the cabinets with a cloth to remove the dust and then apply a wood conditioner to the cabinets. Finally, stain or paint the wood and complete it with two or three clear coats to protect the wood from water exposure.
Upgrading Your Furniture
Upgrading your furniture and home décor is an easy and effective way to make your living quarters look like new. There are great deals at garage sales, thrift stores and on the Internet which will save money. For even increased savings, create your own piece of furniture. You can make a unique headboard, for example, with nothing more than two extra-large posts of wood, a lathe (you can rent this from someone), and a large rectangle of wood. Cover the wood center portion with some batting, fabric, and unique upholstery nails for a new headboard that is truly stunning!
It doesn't matter whether you've recently moved into a home that needs TLC or if it's your existing house. Either way, these unique ideas for getting the best-looking house will help your home look like it's a new place without spending a ton of dough in the process.
