Quilting 101 $24.95 Quilting 101 is a modern-day primer on the basic skills and techniques of quilting. This book is geared toward the absolute novice and assumes you know little or nothing about the crafts of sewing or quilting. Filled with lots of step-by-step photos, useful quilting tip sidebars, and a detailed glossary, Quilting 101 teaches you how to quilt successfully, even if you have never sewn before. You will learn terminology used regularly in quilting, as well as all the basic skills that are the building blocks of the art. From threading the machine and sewing a straight stitch, this book expertly leads you every step of the way to completing more than twenty different quilted projects. The first section includes such topics as: the sewing machine and its accessories, sewing and quilting supplies and how to use them, how to shop for, prepare and cut fabrics, as well as a detailed look at every step of the quilting process. New skills are taught via the creation of an actual quilted project, such as a pillow, placemats, wall hanging, or lap quilt, thereby allowing you to learn a new skill and create a useful item for yourself or a friend. Can you use a lotus 1000 Sewing Machine For Quilting?
I have just taken up quilting and my sewing machine (lotus 1000) has been packing a hissy fit every time I try to quilt on it. when I do normal sewing it is fine its just the quilting. Can I quilt on this machine or will i have to resort to hand sewing.
all answers are much appreciated
Quilting through the top, batting and backing will require a longer stitch and a size 14 needle.
Lengthen the stitch and use a walking foot. The walking foot is like having feed dogs on the top of the fabric and helps to evenly feed the layers. You can find a generic brand at fabric stores for around $20.00.
If you are doing free motion quilting, you need a darning or Quilting Foot and the feed dogs need to be lowered/disengaged.
If you cannot lower the feed dogs, there may be a little plastic accessory that snaps over the feed dogs.
If not, shorten the stitch length to zero and this will help as you move the quilt in the motion you choose for the design you are creating.
Some quilters cover the feed dogs with an index card and masking tape, punching out a hole for the needle.
Make sure the presser foot is down when doing free motion quilting.
Make a sample for testing using the same components as your quilting project.
Set the machine on as large a surface as you can to help support the weight of the quilt as you are stitching.
