Homemade Dishwasher Powder
Sunday, February 7th, 2010There are a LOT of recipes for dishwashing soap. I’ll share what works for me, but I don’t claim it to be the best.
CAN’T I JUST USE SOAP?
Dishwashing machines require low suds and high cleaning power. Regular soap in a dishwasher would result in an overflow of suds onto your kitchen floor. For a dishwasher, the detergent needs to break down grease, disinfect and rinse clean without leaving soap spots.
ARE ESSENTIAL OILS ESSENTIAL?
I don’t use essential oils in my dishwasher powder. Very hot conditions will neutralize the scent of an essential oil. Because quality essential oils are not cheap, I choose to utilize them in other applications. If your preference is to use them, just add your favorite fragrance.
HOMEMADE DISHWASHER DETERGENT
Blend the following together: ½ cup Salt, 1 cup Citric Acid, 2 cups Baking Soda, 2 cups Borax.
Your detergent will just barely fit into a quart sized freezer bag with a zippered closure. I place this inside a larger gallon sized zippered bag. This storage system helps keep the powder dry. The Baking Soda & Citric Acid in this mixture will clump up by soaking up any moisture in the air if not carefully sealed. I use approximately two tablespoons of this mixture per load using a dry kitchen spoon as a scoop. Using this, I’ve never had to use any spot-free solutions for the rinse/drying cycle.
If needed, this powder can also be used to wash dishes in the sink. A bit of vinegar added to the rinse water in the sink will rid dishes of any oily residue.
A HANDY TIP:
I place a clean sponge beneath the bar soap dish next to my kitchen sink. The soap dish has drain holes in the bottom. The soapy water drains from the dish into the sponge. The sponge is already soapy when I need to spot clean a container.
