Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010I know, as model train enthusiasts we are much more comfortable in our basements with our pliers than in front of a glowing computer screen. It just feels phony to practice model training with a PC. The model train hobby has been well off without the computer chip, thank you. Stop playing the part of such a technophobe! For finding the rare model train you so loved as a youth the web was irreplaceable. So I don't have to tell you that the internet has its boons for hobbyists like us. But I’ve been gathering some info and there is some great model train software out there as well. Here are some of my premium finds:
Laying Out and Mapping Model Train Software:
One of the great tools you can find on the internet is the layout visualization and mapping software. Many programs let you to visualize the spatial limitations of your space and employ them to think through your track design in advance. Some of the programs also help you by offering default base tracks as spring boards that can then be built on to fit your individual space. The advanced graphics of the layout planning software even help you to preview your prospective model in realistic 3 dimensional graphics! If your spatial imagination is a handicap this is an useful aid.
Detailing your train in the computer age: Model Train Software for detailing, weathering and decalling:
Another wonderful bit of software is one of these programs that help you to print out and sometimes to even individualize the details for your trains and landscape. So if you want to make one of the buildings in your little town seem as if it made out of red bricks, you just print out a sheet of red bricks and then paste it onto the building to create the façade that you are looking for. To print the lettering in the font and size that you want, you simply choose the style you want, print it, and decal it on your locomotive. The software allows you to change the sizes and to customize the styles so that they are unique to your needs. Ready made decal pages will go the way of the rotary phone. This generates a plethora of choices for making your model train empire unique.
Model Train Software will soon be able to help you with signaling:
One of the most intriguing developing stories in the model train field is the current effort to create a Java based computer controlled signaling system. An icon on your PC could be the portal right into the master control for your whole multi-train model train empire. If the technical hardware aspect of wiring and signaling have always been a chore for you, then this is a dream come true. Imagine that. Your PC now becomes the central command station for your entire model train track design. No more fussing with the signaling box. I certainly know it would help me.
I can see that you for the first time see a couple of helpful features in your computer. But keep an eye out for more innovations. Just like in the real world of trains, computers will no doubt become an indispensable tool for simplified the day to day aspects of operation.
